Social signalling as a framework for understanding human non-verbal behaviour

Face to face social interactions between two people involve a rich exchange of verbal and non-verbal signals, but the cognitive and neural mechanisms supporting dynamic interactions remain poorly understood. This talk will use a social signalling framework to make sense of one particularly social behaviour – imitation – which has been described as a ‘social glue’ that causes affiliation and liking. However, it is not clear what cognitive and brain mechanisms could link imitation to affiliation. By placing the ‘social glue’ hypothesis within a signalling framework, it is possible to make specific testable predictions for how and why we imitate. First, to act as social glue, imitation should be produced when another person is watching and can receive the imitation signal. Second, the person watching should change their evaluation of the imitator. I will describe a series of studies which test the first of these predictions in detail, using a behavioural and neuroimaging methods with infants, children, typical adults and adults with autism spectrum condition. The results converge in showing that being watched increases the tendency to imitate, and supports the interpretation of imitation as a signalling behaviour. Building on this, the second part of this talk describes the new methods available to explore social signalling behaviour in live interactions. Using detailed motion capture together with wavelets analysis, we can track and quantify precise patterns of natural mimicry behaviour and other social cues in two person conversation. Using functional near-infrared spectroscopy, we can record neural signatures of imitating and being imitated while freely-moving participants are engaged in naturalistic tasks. These new approaches can give deeper insights into the details of social behaviour and allow us to define the neural mechanisms of dynamic social interactions. Applying these methods and interpreting them within the context of a social signalling framework shows how we can turn the idea of ‘second person neuroscience’ into a concrete reality.

Our body is not made up solely of cells that contain the genomic information of our chromosomes. We also harbor a large number of microorganisms that are present even from prenatal periods. Most of these microorganisms are bacteria that live in our intestines, and the amount of genes that they contain as a whole can reach up to 3 million; thus exceeding by 100 to 1 the metabolic and functional capacities of our own genome. Therefore, in recent years this intestinal hologenome has been considered a fundamental component for the study of human behavior and mental health. For example, important associations have been observed between different pathologies, such as the development and persistence of depression, with the variation in richness, abundance and communication of these microorganisms. Interestingly, our lifestyles are in turn fundamental to the establishment of these ecological dynamics. This bi-directional effect has been a co-evolutionary process that has accompanied us since our origins as a species. Currently, the lifestyles experienced by most human populations have created an important selection force for these microorganisms. Measures aimed at eliminating or limiting exposure to pathogens, such as the excessive use of antibiotics, in combination with other factors such as processed foods, have had unintended consequences for the human microbial ecosystem, even difficult to reverse. In this talk I will show how different lifestyles influence the ecosystem dynamics of the human gut microbiome, and how these changes can affect particular groups associated with human behavior and mental health.

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has surfaced new global pressures and challenges, including health risks, significant impositions and prohibitions, and social isolation. How, specifically, do people think, behave, and respond to the pandemic restrictions and risks? Could these responses be determined by the index of socio-moral behavior including empathy, the theory of mind, prosocial behaviors, and moral decision-making? In this work, we evaluate in three different studies, the extent to which socio-moral skills, including the capacity to empathize with and understanding others' perspectives, prosocial decision making, beliefs in conspiracy theories, and deontological moral choices predict the individual perception of COVID-19 risk, impact, risky behaviors and response to public health requirements and impositions. Taking together, affective components of empathy, prosocial decision making, reduced beliefs in conspiracy theories and a tendency to assume deontological moral decisions predicted greater acceptance of quarantine and SARS-CoV-2 consequences (risk perception and impact estimation). These results provide novel evidence for the role of social-moral behaviors and cognition in determining response to stressful situations and thus calls for the promotion of targeted social skills programs to face inspired by this pandemic.

The search for electroencephalographic biomarkers associated with social cognition has gained increasing interest. The purpose of its use has been focused on understanding human interactions and has been extended to the analysis of violence and armed conflict. For the latter, we have sought to identify the electrophysiological patterns that underlie ex-combatants in the process of reintegration into civilian life. This line of research has been relevant to support peace processes such as the Colombian one. This presentation aims to present various studies that show the usefulness of incorporating electrophysiological measurements in the analysis of the problems of the armed conflict in the country. The results of the aforementioned studies have established (1) differences in the early activation of event-related potentials during face and word recognition in ex-combatants compared to controls, as well as (2) variations in brain connectivity for posterior regions during the recognition of images with emotional content. On the other hand, (3) consistent relationships have been established between measures of disposition, behaviour and brain connectivity, which have made it possible to distinguish the groups under study from methodologies derived from computational intelligence. Finally, (4) variations in brain connectivity were identified after training in social cognition in a group of ex-combatants. In conclusion, the use of neuroscientific tools has made it possible to characterize the social cognition of ex-combatants in the reintegration process, and to follow up on intervention strategies in this population. The results provide valuable information into the establishment of neural mechanisms involved in the exercise of violence in contexts of armed conflict, as well as in the formulation of strategies that integrate evidence derived from studies in social cognition to approach the social reintegration process.

Understanding the Neural Underpinnings of Uncertainty in Political Evaluation using Functional MRI.

Prior work in political science has suggested that uncertainty has an impact on political evaluations, yet the exact mechanisms by which uncertainty affects the minds of citizens remain unclear. We conducted two experiments (N = 58 and N = 23) using functional MRI (fMRI) to examine how people make decisions about political information that is uncertain (vs. certain) and incongruent (vs. congruent) with expectations. During fMRI, participants completed an experimental task where they evaluated policy positions attributed to hypothetical political candidates. Each set of trials focused on one candidate (Democrat or Republican), but all participants saw two candidates from each party in a randomized order. On each trial, participants received information about whether the candidate supported or opposed a specific policy issue, along with information indicating the certainty with which the candidate held that position (“may” vs. “definitely”). Information also varied in terms of congruence between issue position and candidate party affiliation. We modeled neural activity as a function of uncertainty, incongruence, and whether participants were viewing ingroup or outgroup party candidates. Preliminary analyses suggest that neural activity in brain regions previously implicated in evaluative processing (anterior cingulate cortex, insular cortex, orbitofrontal cortex) differed as a function of the interaction between uncertainty and incongruence. Implications for the study of emotion and politics and candidate perception are discussed.

The impact of SARS-CoV-2 in dementia across Latin America: A call for urgent regional plan and coordinated response.

The SARS-CoV-2 global pandemic will disproportionately impact countries with weak economies and vulnerable populations including people with dementia. Latin American and Caribbean countries (LACs) are burdened with unstable economic development, fragile health systems, massive economic disparities, and a high prevalence of dementia. Here, I will underscore the selective impact of SARS-CoV-2 on dementia among LACs, the specific strain on health systems devoted to dementia, and the subsequent effect of increasing inequalities among those with dementia in the region. Implementation of best practices for mitigation and containment faces particularly steep challenges in LACs. Similarly, without a vaccine or effective medication, the best hope for mitigating virus transmission is collective behavior change and support for public health interventions (e.g., physical distancing, physical hygiene, and endorsement of health policies) being highly challenging for those people with dementia and their caregivers. Based upon our consideration of these issues, we urgently call for a coordinated action plan, including the development of inexpensive mass testing, behavioral insights specifically developed for people and caregivers of dementia, and multilevel regional coordination for dementia care and research. Brain health diplomacy should lead to a shared and escalated response across the region, coordinating leadership and triangulation between governments and international multilateral networks.

Psychological change in the time of COVID19: Probing the dynamics of American emotional and social attitudes across the pandemic 2020.

The arrival of COVID-19 has resulted in global societal upheaval of extraordinary magnitude, the full scope of which has yet to be determined. The US has been disproportionately impacted by the pandemic, with only 4% of the global population, but more than 20% of the total cases and deaths. In addition to illness and death, the pandemic has also triggered a substantial economic shock and laid bare inequities present throughout US society, fueling the rise of a social justice movement and ongoing protests in the wake of the killing of George Floyd. The extreme and highly volatile nature of this time period affords a unique opportunity to elucidate the dynamics of psychosocial processes as they unfold. In March of 2020, anticipating the unprecedented societal upheaval to come and motivated by the desire to understand the broad psychological impact it would have, the COVID-Dynamic project was initiated (http://coviddynamic.caltech.edu). This ongoing study (launched on April 5th, 2020) follows a large cohort (1000+) of U.S. residents (recruited through Prolific.co) with the goal of capturing their personal experiences related to the pandemic as well as characterizing the evolution of psychological, emotional, attitudinal, and behavioral changes as COVID-19 reverberates across the US. Each wave, participants complete an hour-long battery of standard psychological measures (e.g. assessing stress, anxiety, right wing authoritarianism, humanitarianism/egalitarianism, etc.; see https://osf.io/uenc5 for full list), measures of attitudes towards race and prosociality, questionnaires assessing COVID-19- and Black Lives Matter protest- related behaviors, social decision-making tasks, and multiple in-house experimental measures. The strengths of the COVID-Dynamic study are multiple and include: the breadth of included measures, sample size, its longitudinal and adaptive (to ongoing events) nature, a rigorous approach to data quality assessment and hypothesis testing, and the use of paid participants. In this presentation, we will provide an overview of the COVID-Dynamic project, metrics assessing data quality, and preliminary findings from a variety of projects that are using the data to further our understanding of the psychological impact of these unparalleled times.

The behavioural immune system: effects of pathogen stress on human behaviour.

Long extant proximity to infectious microorganisms has imposed considerable selection pressures across species throughout evolutionary history (Schaller, 2011). In humans, the subsequent host-parasite coevolutionary arms race has resulted in the selection of the behavioural immune system (BIS), to act as the first line of defence by coordinating behaviour to help prevent potential threats of infection from coming into contact with the body (Lieberman & Patrick, 2014; Schaller, 2006; Schaller & Park, 2011). The BIS consists of a suite of ancestrally evolved psychological mechanisms (including the disgust emotion) that collaborate to process and infer the risks of pathogens and related infection through perceptual cues, then function to activate aversive emotional and cognitive responses, which in turn function to motivate avoidance behaviours to neutralise the perceived pathogen threat (Schaller, 2006; Schaller, 2011). The parasite-stress theory of human values and sociality (Fincher & Thornhill, 2014) proposes that the BIS incorporates a system of values and beliefs expressed through ‘in-group assortative sociality’, which is evolutionarily ‘designed’ to bias individuals toward in-group members with shared immunological adaptedness, and to discriminate and avoid out-group individuals because of their potential to carry novel parasites. Evidence suggests that activation of the BIS motivates in-group assortative sociality in individuals, and that these values and associated behaviours encourage more socially and culturally conservative values and beliefs in regions and/or times of high parasite prevalence. Due to geographical and temporal variation of pathogen stress, degrees of assortative sociality, and thus the associated values and beliefs, fall along a continuum - dependent on and covarying with levels of pathogen stress. Groups living in environments with high pathogen stress will tend to exhibit a stronger degree of assortative sociality on one end of the continuum (i.e. conservative, traditional, collectivistic, etc.) compared with those living in environments of low pathogen stress (i.e. liberal, progressive, individualistic, etc.). These assortative preferences are directly related to features of the BIS. Indeed, the three general social components of in-group assortative sociality – philopatry, ethnocentrism, and xenophobia – likely evolved to help negotiate threats of infectious disease. The parasite-stress theory proposes that cultures diverge and vary as a result of geographical and temporal variation in ecological pathogen stress. To demonstrate how this is accomplished, and to explore the potential implications a pandemic may have on the associated individual and social behaviour, I will present a pre-COVID-19 study founded on the parasite-stress theory, followed by a post-outbreak replication of the same study.
